However as with human cosmetics the same principles apply for dogs. All cosmetic ingredients in human and pet, including water, botanicals, synthetics, fragrance, etc have the potential to irritate sensitive skin regardless of the amount present in an individual product or the method in which it is used. Irritations can sometimes occur in the regular course of our daily lives, even where we have used and enjoyed a product successfully for many years.
The trigger for a reaction in either pets or humans can be an unexpected one and may not necessarily repeat itself in the same way. Please always consider any changes to your dog’s regular routine that may have triggered the reaction such as dietary, contact with possible allergens (such as household cleaning liquids, grasses, and pollens, etc), including recent coat clipping, clipper rash, hygiene clipping, coat growth change, genetic skin orders, was bacteria already present on the skin, were their mats in the undercoat, over use of a loather or brush when washing aggravating the acid mantle, not wetting the coat well enough, not applying the products evenly, or not rinsing-off well, over or under grooming, was the skin moisturised with a conditioner after washing, etc. Like human brands, should they experience an adverse reaction to any cosmetic preparation, the same applies to dogs and pets, the best course of action is to discontinue use and if necessary, consult your veterinary clinic to establish whether they have experienced an irritation or an allergy. And if in doubt, when introducing a new product we always recommend patch testing, the same as cosmetics, and ensure you follow the how to use instructions.

How should I store my smith&burton products?
We recommend you keep your products in a cool place away from direct light regardless of whether the smith&burton product are contained in plastic or aluminium.
The black premium PET bottle packaging is also chosen to intentionally protect the natural ingredients, which are sensitive and vulnerable to light.
Our packaging helps with preserving the formulation and keeps the contents in a UV protected, safe and stable environment.
The packaging is designed to minimise waste and is 100 percent recyclable. All our PET bottles are BPA Free. Our balm is packaged in 100 percent recyclable aluminium tin.
The label on your smith&burton product displays an icon that tells you how many months your product will be at its best once opened. You will find this on the back.
It is best to use clean hands when using the products especially when applying the Heal & Protect Balm or to use a small spatula to scoop out product for use.
